Tofu Stir Fry Recipe
The only experience I have with Tofu is from when I visited my vegetarian relatives. I have not got any of their recipes, and trust me they have many different ways Tofu vegetarian recipes, but this recipe by Moni Dadi is one of the best tofu recipes for beginners.
Tofu is a simple ingredient, hence most tofu recipes are pretty simple. But the history of Tofu is not quite simple. Tofu is popular all around the world for being a solid vegetarian food option. But tofu is more popular in Eastern Asia, and it is most popular in Japan. Tofu is an important part of Japan’s national cuisine.
But Tofu did not originate in Japan, it was first perceived in China almost 2000 years ago. Historians believe that Tofu was first made around 200 BC in China, and soybeans were only introduced in Japan around 1000 years ago.
The manufacturing process of Tofu is similar to that of cheese, and has remained almost unchanged in the last 1000 years. To make Tofu, soybeans are first soaked to make soy milk. Then a coagulant is added to the milk. This agent acts to separate the milk into curds and whey. It is then strained and pressed so the whey drips out and you only have Tofu left.
Adding the coagulant agent is similar in much the same way as rennet (the stomach of unweaned calves) is added to cow’s milk to make cheese. There are some different curdling agents to make tofu. The agent can be either a salt; nigari, magnesium chloride or calcium sulphate or an acid (acetic, i.e. vinegar or citric i.e. lemon juice).
As I already mentioned, Tofu is popular worldwide. But if you look at Bengali cuisine, most tofu recipes are vegetarian tofu recipes. Tofu is very popular as a substitute of meat among Bengali and Indian vegetarians. They make different types of Tofu vegetable curry.
I remember when I first tasted tofu, it had the chewy texture of meat, but it didn’t exactly taste like meat. But tofu does pack a lot of protein. 100g of tofu contains almost 17g of protein.
Bengali cuisine relies heavily on fish and meat to supply protein. So vegetarians or vegans sometimes struggle to incorporate the necessary amount of protein needed for a healthy diet. In that aspect tofu is a life saver, providing Bengali vegans with their essential protein requirements.
And when I say Bengali vegetarians rely on tofu, I don’t just mean simple Tofu stir fry recipes or Tofu vegetable curry recipes. They even make biryani with Tofu. So you can imagine how much Tofu vegetarian recipes are loved. They don’t just make simple tofu recipes, they make those dishes special.
And I am sure anyone will appreciate this Tofu Stir Fry recipe by Moni Dadi. It is as delicious as it looks, and it is simple to make as well. Anyone wanting to try out tofu can easily make this tofu stir fry.
What you need to be a little aware of is the tofu stir fry sauce. Wait for the sauce to thicken, but do not wait too long and the dish will be dry. You can have the tofu stir fry sauce light if you like, without thickening it too much.
